Top 3 Paint Problems with DIY Solutions

Paint is an essential part of any real estate property. Paint helps protect surfaces from wear and tear, and damage from the elements. A good coat of paint can keep your structure safe from damage and also keep it looking fresh. Paint is really useful, but just like anything else, paint failure is possible and therefore paint needs to be maintained as well.

As paint gets exposed to the elements, it gets damaged and worn out in a number of ways. Fortunately, most paint problems can be fixed quite easily.

Today, we’re going to discuss 3 common problems that tarnish your paint coatings and how you can fix them.

1. Flaking and Blistering

Problem: Blistering and flaking is an all-too-common problem when it comes to wall painting. This usually happens when moisture gets trapped beneath your layer of paint. Other common causes of your paint blistering include applying a layer of paint over an unclean surface. If you don’t take care of a flaky spot on your layer of paint, it can quickly spread and ruin your entire pain surface.

Solution: If taken care of on time, flaky/blistering paint is really easy to deal with. You’ll need a scraping tool, some sandpaper, paint primer, and some paint.

Use a scraping tool to remove paint from the affected area completely. Once you have removed the ruined paint, use a sandpaper to smooth out the scraped area. Once the entire surface has been smoothed out, remove any remaining debris and apply a layer of paint primer. Once the paint primer dries up, you can apply a fresh layer on paint on it.

If you have multiple spots of flaky or blistering paint on a wall, it’s better to call an expert for help, unless you’re very confident in your DIY skills.

2. Cracking

Problem: You may have noticed that some painted surfaces end up forming visible cracks in their layer of paint. These paint cracks compromise the aesthetics of your walls and also expose the surface underneath to wear and tear.

There are two common types of cracks that occur on painted surfaces. Fine and thin cracks usually occur when your layer of paint becomes very old. Thick and uneven cracks form when paint hasn’t been prepared properly before application.

Solution: If your painted surface has a few cracks on it, you can try fixing it. Applying 1 or 2 thinned out layers of paint can help cover smaller cracks. In order to thin out your paint before application, you can add various thinning agents into it.

Keep in mind that in order to effectively cover cracks in your paint, you have to find a shade of paint that matches the color of your previously applied coat.

3. Molding Paint

Problem: Mold growing on top of or underneath your paint can be an ugly sight. It’s also a serious problem as it can damage your entire wall if not dealt with timely. Mold growth generally occurs due to excessive moisture.

Solution: Mold growth can be hard to deal with. Your best bet is to completely strip paint from the affected surface, treat it with fungicide, make sure it’s dry, and then apply a fresh layer of paint on it.

Conclusion

Paint beautifies and protects surfaces from the elements. In order to maintain its effectiveness, you need to take care of your paint. Fortunately, most paint problems can be solved quite easily.
